The average lifespan of a mattress is usually between 7-10 years. But there are other factors to consider. If you are waking with aches and pains, it may be time to replace your old mattress. Over time mattresses can settle depending on their quality, materials and use.
Wear And Tear – Mattress shows signs of sagging, lumps, tears, stains, etc.
Sneezing and Coughing – signs of allergies.
Lifestyle Changes – Marriage, surgery, pregnancy, etc.
Human Age – As we age our sleeping needs change.
Medical – To address better sleeping positions for arthritis, sleep apnea, insomnia, etc.
Comfort – As our bodies change, so do our sleeping styles and needs.
While there are many “types” of mattresses coined in the sleep industry. There are a very few that are most common. Choosing a type is a very personal decision and depends on everything from budget to sleeping positions.
Here are the most common types you will hear about most:
Innerspring (the most common) – Around since the 1900s, these mattresses are made up of steel coils (or springs). The size, shape and number of coils can differ from brand to brand. These “coils” can be wired together or “pocketed” – wrapped depending on the manufacturer. While often popular due to affordability they can wear out quickly.
Memory Foam – Becoming highly popular, memory foam is made up of a polyurethane foam. Known for its comfort, memory foam allows the sleeper to “sink in” for perfect body support.
“First designed in the mid-1960s for NASA airplane seats, memory foam is made from a substance called viscoelastic.”

Gel – The Gel mattress is a makeup of both gel and foam. One of the greatest benefits is its disposition of heat, a common complaint of memory foam. It is a great choice for those with chronic pain issues and side-sleepers. It also is known for motion isolation.
Latex – The latex mattress offers a little more bounce and is a bit more heat resistant than foam.
Adjustable Air Mattress – The adjustable air mattress is designed with adjustable air chambers at its core. They are becoming a chosen alternative to the other more common types of mattresses because sleepers can “adjust” the firmness for their own personal comfort and rest. They offer a more “personalized” sleep option.
Pillow Top – A pillow top mattress adds that extra softness and comfort to sleepers. Note: “Flipping” may not be possible unless both sides have a pillow top. However, turning your mattress regularly can be an option.
So many variables factor into whether you should pick a firm, medium or soft mattress. Everyone will feel a bed differently because of varying body weights and heights. At the end of the day, pick what feels right and what will be your best avenue to a great sleep.
Purchasing a mattress online can be tricky and can end up costing you! Often online mattresses have very strict return policies, if returnable at all. Those that are returnable end up in landfills and are creating even greater environmental issues. But there are a couple greater, more personal problems with buying a mattress online.
